Out of Jail and Homeless

Since Mayor Bill de Blasio issued his stay-at-home order on March 16th, more than 2,000 people have been released from City jails… ‘Even under the best of circumstances, many of those people would have ended up in shelters or on the street’…. Nationally, formerly incarcerated people are almost 10 times more likely to be homeless than the general public… ‘We already have a ballooning homelessness problem; now there will be a lot of people who haven't paid rent for three months who have no income.’
